Polymer Solutions Inc. (Blacksburg, Virginia) has announced
an advanced polymer wound-care bandage that promises to
help heal military injuries faster and with less pain.
“TheraGauze” stays moist for multiple days
and is nonstick. It uses a hydrogel polymer that “acts
like a molecular pump to infuse water, saline, or medicaments
into a wound site while also acting like a molecular sponge
to remove exudates,” Polymer Solutions explains.
Researchers at Polymer Solutions developed a unique composition
based on acrylic monomers to create a bright white-colored,
tasteless, and odorless hydrogel. They worked with Dr.
Guy Levy, originator of the technology and founder of
Soluble Systems LLC, the Virginia-based company that holds
the U.S. and foreign patents. A clinical trial using TheraGauze
in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers is under way
at Northwestern University (Illinois).
